The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
